Gani Fawehimi(SAN)(1938-2009)
“True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” - Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.
I am short of words over the shock news that Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) is dead!
Chief Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi has no equivalent in Nigerian history regardless of any perspective one tries to view it, he WAS an author, publisher, philanthropist, social critic, human and civil rights lawyer and politician extraordinaire.Gani lived and died for what he believed in.
I am indeed short of words as what else can be said about this great citizen of the world that has not been said. Gani himself being an enigma has acted all that needs to be said about him that any attempt to praise or castigate him will be at the peril of the his promoters and traducers.
Ironically, Gani Fawehinmi had no landmark in Nigeria due to the ineptitude of those saddles with the responsibility of governance in Nigeria since he is the sharpest thong in their flesh and one will not be surprised to see governments of the day trying to outdone themselves in the locust race of institution of one edifice and another to belatedly immortalised the undisputable Senior Advocate of Nigerian people.
Gratefully, GANI FAWEHINMI is a landmark that will forever live in the heart of those that believe in equality, freedom and justice. I can only but described Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) by borrowing from words of Martin Luther King Jnr. in the following terms: “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.
