News Report: Tension In Nigeria's Main Oil City Over Suspected Assasination Of A Former Niger Delta Militant Leader
There is tension in Port Harcourt, capital city of Rivers state of Nigeria over the suspected assasination of a former commander of the Movement For The Emancipation of Niger Delta(MEND), Mr. Soboma George by a yet unknown rival gang. George was reportedly assasinated yesterday evening at the Borokiri area of Port Harcourt.
A chidi opara reports network member reported that there was sporadic shooting last night at the Kolokuma waterside area of Borokiri. These shootings according to the report was suspected to be the reaction of a little known gang loyal to Soboma George.
Another network member reported wild jubilations around the Gambia street area of Diobu suspected to be the stronghold of the "Elegem face" gang. "Elegem face" is reportedly opposed to George.
Movements of suspected gang members was reported around the Rumukrushe, Elelewo and Akpajo Eleme axis of the town.
Non of chidi opara reports' gang insiders could be reached on phone so far. A low level security contact however informed us that "we are aware that there could be a gang war". The Police spokesperson would not confirm or deny the incident, but a Rivers state Police Command Headquarters insider confirmed the incident.
When one of our network members visited the Creek Road Market this morning, the incident was the main topic of discussions. The same situation was obtainable at the yam market opposite and at the mile1 and mile3 markets in Diobu.
At the State and Federal Secretariat Complexes, workers were seen in small groups discussing the incident.
There have not been official reactions from the Police and the State government at the time of preparing this report.
