Report: Strategic Information On HIV And Young People

“This report comes 30 years into the epidemic and 20 years into the global AIDS response. It comes in the year in which the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on HIV/AIDS and universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support targets (2010) are to be achieved, and it comes with only four years remaining to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Th is report shows that these global commitments will be achieved only if the unique needs of young women and men are acknowledged, and their human rights fulfi lled, respected, and protected. In order to reduce new HIV infections among young people, achieve the broader equity goals set out in the MDGs, and begin to reverse the overall HIV epidemic, HIV prevention and treatment eff orts must be tailored to the specifi c needs of young people. The legal and policy barriers that prevent young people from accessing HIV services must be addressed, and young people should be engaged more effectively in the response.”
