Rabbi Yisrael Oriel, who is in charge of the Yehudim of Drom E.I.(Africa), an African orthodox Jewish community based in London have written to the Chairman of Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) and Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan on the crisis in Cote D'Ivoire.
In a letter dated January 1st, 2011, signed by a B.Y.E.O. Zevulum, "Talmid of Rabbi Yisrael Oriel" and addressed to the Nigerian President, a copy of which is in the possession of chidi opara reports, the Cameroonian born Rabbi whose area of authority includes Nigeria, requested the ECOWAS Chairman to send a personal assistant to receive "mouth to mouth the Torah dispatched". The "Torah" according to the letter contain "genuine idea of solving the problem in Ivory coast speedily and peacefully."
Further information available to chidi opara reports has it that Rabbi Yisrael Oriel was on 25th May 2003 sent by the Rabbinical Council of Great Britain as an emissary "to investigate the authenticity of the Jewish community in Nigeria". At the conclusion of the assignment, he was appointed "a community Rabbi in the lands of Nigeria."
We have not been able so far to confirm receipt of the Rabbi's letter.
ECOWAS have been battling to contain the crisis in Cote D' Ivoire since the last presidential election in which the incumbent, Mr.Laurent Gbagbo and the main opposition candidate, Mr.Alassane Ouattara have both been claiming victory. Cote D' Ivorie, also known as Ivory Coast is a french speaking member of the fifteen-member regional economic bloc.
