CALL ON THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE FOR THE IMMEDIATE AND UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE OF ILLEGALLY AND UNCONSTITUTIONALLY DETAINED INEC ACCREDITED OBSERVERS

The attention of the Centre for Rights and Grassroots Initiative (CRGI) has been drawn to the undemocratic, illegal, crude, barbaric and unconstitutional arrest of INEC accredited observers of Justice and Equity organization by men of the Nigeria Police force at a public location Disney hotels in Owerri Imo state, where they were undergoing training and orientation in performing their civic responsibilty to fatherland in monitoring the Anambra State gubernatorial elections some 24 hours ago.

We at (CRGI) are pained and disturbed that this latest barbaric and crude act by the Police is not only illegal but has the potential to undermine the collective interest of Nigerians for a free, fair and credible election.

We at CRGI had earlier warned the security agencies to be professional and patriotic in the discharge of thier constitutional responsibility and regard this illegality by the police as an attempt to intimidate and harrass innocent and willing voters from exercising their franchise and other constitutionally allowed stakeholders from performing their duties on election day and this must be condemned by all men and women of goodwill who wish our country well.

We want to use this medium to warn that this act of terrorising innocent and law abiding citzens in the discharge of their constitutional duties rather than criminals by the police and other security agencies will not be tolerated.

We are hereby calling on the IGP to immediately order the unconditional release from custody of these patriots who are committed to the good of Nigeria.

We are also demanding from the IGP an unreserved apology to these patriots in particular and Nigerians in general for this misdemeneour by the Nigeria police.

Thanks,

Yours Sincerely,

Nelson Ekujumi,
Executive Director
