Report By Campaign For Democracy South-East Region Publicity Arm
The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has urged Anambra State government to install Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and streetlights to put an end to kidnapping in Onitsha and its environs.
The Chairman of CD South-East Region, Comarde Uzor Uzor, made the appeal recently after the group protested the kidnapping and non-release of some abducted members of Fegge community in Onitsha for over a year.
The group marched with placards, which have the following inscriptions: ``Who kidnapped our three brothers: Mr Vitus Ezekweme; Mr Collins Ifezue and Mr Ifeanyi Okoye’’ and ``Install CCTV and Streetlights in Onitsha now’’.
Others read: ``We want our brothers released alive’’, ``New CP where are you?’’, ``OC SARS where are you’’?. ``It is time for a change in Onitsha’’ and ``Police flush-out criminals now’’.
Uzor noted that the kidnapping and holding of breadwinners for a year even when ransom had been paid to their abductors was the height of wickedness.
``Three prominent members of Fegge community was kidnapped on Dec. 5, 2012; ransoms of N5 million; N2.2 million and N2 million had been paid for their release. They are however, yet to be released. For now, we do not know whether they are dead or alive’’, he said.
The CD boss also urged the police and other security agencies in the state to unravel the identitie of those behind the crime; adding that the security vote given to the governor must be put to work in the state.
``Gov. Peter Obi, as a matter of urgency, should install CCTV and streetlights in Onitsha, especially in Fegge community that had witnessed kidnappings over the past four years", Uzor said.
Speaking, Comrade Augustine Chukwudum, President of Ndi-Igbo Unity Forum, said that it was high time the city of Onitsha receive the security attention it deserves and that ``government should be pro-active in crime fighting. This is a commercial city and efforts should not be spared in making it safe for business and other human activities".
