U-Report: CD Says Obi, Okorocha, Best Govs. In S/E Nigeria

Governors Okorocha(L) And Obi

Report By: Campaign For Democracy, S/E Nigeria

The Campaign for Democracy (CD), South-East Region has rated Governors Rochas Okorocha, Peter Obi and Sullivan Chime high in infrastructural and human capital development.

This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen by CD in Onitsha , Anambra on Tuesday.

The statement was signed by Dede Uzor A. Uzor and Dr. Jerry Chukwuokolo, who are the chairman and secretary of the group respectively.

The statement said that within two years of Gov. Okorocha administration, he had tarred close to 500 kilometres of roads, which are mostly in the rural areas of the three senatorial zones of the state.

``Apart from roads, the Okorocha led administration had erected monumental buildings and a central gate-way in each of the senatorial district of Imo state.

``There is the building of ultra-modern general hospitals in the 27 council areas of the state and the running of functional free education system from primary school level to tertiary institution in the state.

``Apart from the recent N500 million given to security agencies as a motivational measure; the governor had not done so well in terms of security; Imo state is still fraught with a lot of criminality, making the state unfavourable for investors,’’ it said.

The statement also blamed Okorocha for the sacking of 10,000 workers employed by his predecessor, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim before he left office.

The statement said that Anambra state scored second in ranking. Gov. Obi had tarred over 500 kilometres of roads within his six years stay in office.

``Obi renovated and revitalized secretariat complexes of 21 council areas of the state; built new civil servants’ secretariat headquarters, new teaching hospital, ultra-modern electronic library and built two stadia in Onitsha .

``He constructed over 50 bridges across communities in Anambra state, especially those at the grassroots; gave security agencies over 400 operational and equipped vehicles and paid salaries, pensions and entitlements of workers promptly.

``But Obi had failed to provide water for the teeming population in Onitsha and its environs and his non conduct of local council elections.

``No investment in human capital development, which had led to high incidences of commercial motorcycle riding as well as high crime rate,’’ it said.

CD said that Enugu State government was another administration that had shown commitment to the development of its people.

``Gov. Chime embarked on massive development of urban areas and through this uplifted the status of Enugu state from a colonial city to a modern mega city with first class amenities.

``The governor had also conducted local council election, which had eluded other states and restored grassroots political participation and economic development.

``However, chime had failed to provide social amenities to rural dwellers in the state especially the boundary communities between the state and other neighbouring states.

``The recent absence of Gov. Chime for over three months had stalled economic development and still causing great hardship to the citizens especially civil servants in the state,’’ it said.

In Ebonyi, which is ranked fourth on the table; Gov. Martin Elechi would be commended for linking rural areas and lifting the state from its rustic nature to a living state.

``But he had failed to conduct council election; failed to resolve the age-long land dispute between Ezza and Ezilo communities and not buried the victims of the Ezza-Ezilo communal crisis who had been in the mogue for over three years.

``he had failed to invest in human education and capital development; while the on-going land dispute between the state and Cross River State had left dozens dead,’’ it said.

Finally, the Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia State is ranked fifth and least among the South-East governor. He had spent six years in office.

Orji have checkmated the sky-rocketed crime rate of kidnapping and armed robbery in Abia State .

``Orji has also united Abia political elites, which had made the state relatively peaceful.

``But he failed in conducting local council election; failed to give the massive illiterate population of Abia state free and functional education.

``He lacked the vision to develop the potentials of Aba to be the Japan of Africa; running government on decayed infrastructure; non functional industries and laying off quality non-indigenous staff from Abia workforce.

``He did not tar up to 300 kilometres of roads in the whole state,’’ it said.

CD is urging South-East governors to procure tracking equipment for its security agencies for optimal performances in tracking down criminals.
