Late Sankaralingam Jagannathan |
The Right
Livelihood Award Foundation mourns the death of Ghandian activist Mr.
Sankaralingam Jagannathan. Mr. Jagannathan worked on the behalf of the landless
poor all his life and received the Right Livelihood Award together with his
wife Krishnammal in 2008.
Sankaralingam Jagannathan passed away at Ghandigram, Tamil Nadu in Southern
India, on Tuesday, February 12th, around 12.30. He died at the age of 100. The
Right Livelihood Award Foundation was informed about his death by his wife Krishnammal
Jagannathan
The
Jagannathans have worked tirelessly to redistribute land to the landless and
are the founders of the organization LAFTI - Land for the Tillers' Freedom. The
Right Livelihood Award Jury honoured them in 2008 "...for two long
lifetimes of work dedicated to realising in practice the Gandhian vision of
social justice and sustainable human development, for which they have been
referred to as 'India's soul'."
The
Right Livelihood Award Foundation's thoughts and prayers are with Krishnammal
Jagannathan and their family at this difficult time. We are sure that Mr.
Jagannathan’s vision and work will continue and be taken forward by the
countless individuals he has inspired.
