Report By Emperor Iwuala
The people of Umulu Ife
in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government of Imo State have called on their
representatives to help them realize an electricity project which the village
has been undertaking for nearly thirty years now.
This was contained in
recent letters the village wrote to the Senator representing Owerri Zone
Senator Chris Anyanwu, Member Representing Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Federal
Constituency in the country’s House of Representatives Hon. Ralph Igbokwe and
member Representing Ezinihitte Mbaise in the Imo State House of Assembly Dr
Obioma Ekennia.
Part of the letter reads
thus:
‘… We have an
electricity project for our village which we have been unable to realize for 30
years now due to financial incapacity. We have executed the project to an
extent but need your support to enable us realize it. Our people will ever
remain grateful if you help us realize this dream that has looked like a mirage
to us…’.
Speaking passionately to
some media men in Mbaise recently, the Chairman of the village, Deacon Goddy
Obasi narrated how the village had tried in the past to have electricity.
‘We started our
electricity project in the early eighties but up to this moment, we are yet to
have light. All the villages surrounding us have electricity but we do not
have. We wrote to Ex-Governor Ikedi Ohakim and nothing was done. We also wrote
to Rochas and also there was no response till date. That is why we have
approached our representatives at all levels to see if we may be lucky to get
help. We have some electricity poles in some areas but need more that can go
round…’. We also need a transformer and other electrification accessories like
wires, aluminium conductors, stay rods etc to hook ourselves to the Power
Holding Electricity.
Deacon Obasi also said
that recently, the village consulted a firm that surveyed the area and came up
with an estimate of (3) three million naira as the total cost for the project
and begged the government to come to their aid.
